Kindness of Strangers

Old woman, stranger

in a foreign land,

sits on unforgiving ground,

as the world walks straight on by.

Delivering a well worn line,

She looks you in the eye,

“Hello, Big Issue lady?”

She knows you won’t reply.

Unnoticed by the hurried mass,

all hungry for a bargain,

one man goes against the tide,

makes this faceless woman, human.

“Hi, how are you today?” he asks,

cups her hand in his

and holds it tightly, before

dropping a coin in her tin.

Maybe, just for a moment,

She sees the face of God

in the kindness of a stranger,

and knows she is not forsaken.

  1. A poem with great heart, and a story worth telling...
Who knows? 'But for the grace of God, there I go'..
Yes.. A fall from grace can happen to any of us with bad health, unemployment, natural disasters..so many variables out of our control..So a little kindness is worth spreading around.
    A fine poem, Maeve..

  2. Thank you Barbara. So true that any one of us could fall on hard times, especially in the current climate here in Ireland at the moment. There but for the grace of God indeed.

  3. Nice writing, Maeve. The visuals are strong. I could easily follow the sequence of events and felt the kindness of the stranger followed by the magazine seller's gratitude. Nice blog design, too. ;-)

  5. Really like this Buttercup. Well written, and the visual imagery is so clear. Very human poem. We all have our moments when we can't face other peoples sufferings, and moments when we really can. This piece captures society as it is now, quite clearly.

I love the blog design, Maeve. :) x

  6. I love this poem Buttercup, and I'm very impressed the way you set up your blog. I gave mine the name 'Dreams and Memories' but it does not appear in my blog address like yours does. There's so much about this blogging thing I just don't understand. Rachael x

  7. Hi Rachael thanks for that. As regards setting this up it was just a bit of luck and trial and error I think!

I really, really like how the poem starts and the way it unfolds here...

Barbara has a point too in her post. This could be any one of us at any time...!
